Institute for Advanced Manufacturing

The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (IfAM) is driving development of cutting-edge technology with the aim of radically improving all aspects of advanced manufacturing.  This is often associated with new technologies and systems for cost efficient, knowledge intensive, high value and environmentally friendly production. Advanced manufacturing also addresses the full product lifecycle from development through to manufacture, usage and disposal.

The Institute has partners in sectors as diverse as aerospace, automotive, medical, instrumentation, defence, power engineering, textiles and clothing. Key to the IfAM success is research that is directly applicable to industry. We work closely with hundreds of organisations – from determined young start-ups and regional SMEs to powerful multinationals such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems. In addition, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is providing a further £979k to support business engagement and knowledge transfer activities with local SMEs with the aim of supporting innovation and growth within the region.

The ERDF project aims to increase competitiveness and therefore survival and growth rates of regional SME’s by increasing their R&D activity, facilitating their uptake of advanced and sustainable manufacturing technologies, raising their awareness of new technological developments within the UK and Europe and facilitating the development of new business collaborations across the supply chain. This will prevent further outsourcing of the regions manufacturing industry to lower wage economies and stimulate economic growth in the region.

Key objectives are:

  • To support East Midlands Companies in utilising and capitalising upon high quality scientific developments both within the University and nationally.
  • To further develop within the East Midlands a national Centre to support UK manufacturers in adopting new manufacturing technology; increasing their competitiveness against overseas manufacturers.
  • To enable knowledge and technology transfer of University expertise to local businesses.
  • To create development in the East Midlands region through enhanced national profile and increased manufacturing and technology development and support.
  • To assist SME's in the region to access and trial state of the art facilities in advanced manufacturing
  • Through increased competitiveness and new collaborations, to support the creation of new jobs and safeguard existing ones within regional businesses

The Institute is supported by a dedicated business facing team and the details of their capabilities can be found at here or directly at their website
